Show Notes: Jason Fried’s Bio From Chicago Went to school in Arizona for Finance Graduated in 1996 and started doing freelance web design 37 Signals Started in 1999 as a web design consulting firm In February 2004 became a product development firm with the release of Basecamp The 37 Signals team David Heinemeier Hansson, Programmer Ryan Singer, Designer Sam Stephenson, Programmer Marcel Molina, Programmer Matt Linderman, Designer Jamis Buck, Programmer 37Signals corporate philosophy, less everything, design first Most companies paint on an interface after building a backend 37Signals starts with customer interface Everything they build, they build for themselves Build products that a certain percentage of the world really really loves Jason suggests to build something for yourself You are more passionate about personal projects Jason’s Web 2.0 Definition What it’s not It’s always been about people It’s simple focused elegant tools that get out of your way It’s software solving less problems, not more problems Craftsmen don’t use all purpose tools The “Bubble” The last bubble was actually a stock market bubble Companies not making money does not make a bubble, that’s just business How to become a design expert Make yourself a design expert Not one of the employees are trained designers Just look at it from a normal person’s perspective, not an art project Learn typography Less structure, less academic design Try to keep an equal number of designers and programmers We discuss 37Signals development process They operate with almost no roadmap They adapt They are not blinded by long term plans Rails wasn’t planned on, David just recognized it 37Signals as a web 2.0 industry leader They like to share but it was unintentional they are considered leaders They are trying to help other people by doing Never been easier to build web services Jason urges everyone to take control of your business and creative future 10 hours a week to build basecamp over 3.5 months Build a simple product people will use Embrace your constraints Chris says wake up one hour earlier and start building something VC Not interested in VC money currently Self-funded Open to like-minded partners Their goal has never been to build to flip Selling your business is a side effect of a great product Are there any great companies that were built to flip?
