University presidents, in my view, should be visionary policy makers who set the course of academic research and education rather than mere nannies taking care of babies. Those educators might argue, “If the students had learned to be independent before they came to college, I would need to do so. It is because they were not taught all these things in primary and secondary school that I, a university president, have to teach them now.” Though these remarks sound reasonable, yet it is because the students have all along been taught in a spoon-fed manner that they haven’t acquired independence and self-discipline after 12 years of schooling. Wouldn’t it merely result in an endless vicious cycle if this sort of “babysitting” is continued at university level? What do we consider the goals of education to be? To turn out submissive students, or students who are able to assess a situation, make decisions and pass judgments on their own? The Issue of Development Development has always been an issue of universal concern. After gaining independence, most developing countries have scored great achievements in their efforts to develop their national economies, to shake off poverty and backwardness, and to narrow the gap between Western developed countries and themselves. Some of them have succeeded in their “economic takeoff”, or even created “miracles”. Although economic growth is the basis of social progress, such growth does not necessarily mean development. To avoid “growth without development”, all countries in the world take sustainable development as an important option for their national strategy of macro-economic development, and they are fully aware that mankind must have the proper means for sustainable development. This is of far-reaching significance for it marks a major turning point in the way we think about development. However, environmental protection is a grave problem with developing countries. Some of them have not taken effective measures to protect their environment for a lack of awareness on sustainable development. Most developing countries, therefore, are faced with the pressing and difficult task of giving priority to sustainable development in formulating future strategies for their economic development . ashur204 Posted at 2005-08-03 18:14:00 Edit | Trackback(0) Comments Add Comment Updated
