He grew up in the China Town of San Francisco, got his PhD in ethnomusicology in Wesleyan University and spent the late ten-plus years in Java, Indonesia. He has performed with John Cage and La Monte Young, and has done sound for Merce Cunningham. However, the love for indirectness, stillness and meditation led him into the world of Javanese music, in which he has been studying with some of the greatest masters of gamelan music, dance and shadow theatre for 30 years. Alex Dea's composition work in sound and movement carefully mixes modern and traditional methods and techniques of Western, Indonesian, and Indian art, creating an aesthetic which accomodates the new and the old. "Music and dance are equal components. They are both movement--in sound and space." Alex Dea's performance in China will focus on the "secret of overtones" which are hidden inside ordinary sounds. He will invite local singers to sing long-held-out tones, which will create an atmosphere of accidental chords and meditative states together with his video projection. Alex Dea will play the Javanese rebab, and Chinese gong and cymbal, as well as improvise in singing-speaking. At the same time he will do electronic manipulations with the sounds. In the singing-speaking part, Alex Dea will tell some psychological stories of growing up in America. The content of the text changes according to the venue and audience, who will also be involved in the performance.
