άÃ׶ûÔÚºÚºÐÀïÍæС¿×³ÉÏñ 6.30pm Thursday 11 November 2004 Darwin Lecture Theatre, Darwin Building, UCL, Gower Street, WC1 Bartlett School of Architecture ¨C Lowe International Lecture Phil Steadman Vermeer Behind the Lens For more than a hundred years it has been suggested by art historians that the great Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) might have used some kind of optical apparatus when producing his ¡®photographic¡¯ pictures of domestic scenes. In this lecture Philip Steadman will present powerful evidence to support this idea, based on a series of perspective reconstructions of the 3D spaces shown in ten of Vermeer¡¯s interiors. The analysis shows that these ten pictures all depict the same room, identifiable as an actual room in the house where Vermeer lived in the small town of Delft. There can be little doubt that Vermeer used a camera obscura ¨C the predecessor of the modern photographic camera ¨C installed at the back of this room, to trace his perspectives and even to paint under the projected optical image. His use of the camera obscura had important consequences for Vermeer¡¯s unprecedented painting style, whose strange qualities have perhaps only been fully appreciated in the age of chemical photography. The work was published as a book, Vermeer¡¯s Camera (Oxford University Press) in 2001. The lecture will describe a number of more recent developments, and some new experiments with making paintings inside a camera obscura.
