Albert Einstein, Charter member of AFT Local 552 Princeton, New Jersey The demand for new teachers is growing as education changes rapidly and the number of school-age children increases. Education reform is taking place across the country. New federal and state initiatives are encouraging all American schools, teachers and students to strive to be the best in the world. These changes are creating new challenges as well as new opportunities for prospective teachers. Veteran teachers will tell you that teaching is difficult, wonderful, exhausting, fun, stressful, enlightening-and rewarding beyond compare. Teaching requires enormous patience. There is no ready-made formula for good teaching. Studies on effective teaching demonstrate, on the contrary, there are nearly as many successful styles as there are successful teachers. But there are some qualities in good teachers on which nearly everyone agrees. Candidates for teaching should be among the highest academic performers. Good teachers are fair to their students; they are interested in ideas; they believe that teaching and learning are important. They have a strong commitment to democracy and social progress. Good teachers want to make a difference. If you are interested in this exciting, everchanging field, you need to be aware that decisions about hiring teachers are made by local school districts, and requirements for entering the teaching profession are set by each state individually This means that you will need to consult a variety of resources to get the specific information you want. Preparing to Become a Teacher Becoming a teacher requires at least a bachelor's degree, usually related to the field in which you plan to teach, and in most states some form of advanced training is needed. Today's classrooms present teachers with more challenges and therefore demand a deeper understanding of successful classroom practices. Dedication and a desire to help children are important, but teachers also need a strong academic background and solid professional preparation. There is widespread recognition of America's need to build a highly skilled, diverse teacher workforce. States are now raising their standards for teacher licensing and increasing salaries to attract well-educated people who otherwise would be inclined to work in other areas. Generally, teacher salaries have improved considerably in recent years, but salaries vary greatly from state to state and even by school district. The average teacher salary in Connecticut is twice that of South Dakota, for example. Besides a degree of job security, teaching offers a uniform salary schedule in which earnings are based on years of experience and training, and fringe benefits usually including health insurance, paid sick leave and retirement. Most large colleges and universities offer degrees in education leading to teacher certification. Some colleges specialize in teacher training. The choice of which kind to attend is up to you. Good teachers come from all types of institutions. There are various types of teacher preparation programs, including some aimed at mid-career professionals from other fields. Each state has its own teacher licensing and certification program. Most of these programs fit into the following categories: Four- or five-year college degree programs in elementary education or secondary education, to certification upon graduation. These programs can vary greatly depending on individual university requirements. Post-collegiate programs for people who hold a bachelor's degree and wish to enter the teaching field. Alternative licensing and certification programs in states where there is a shortage of teachers in a particular field. These programs tend to be short-term and intensive in order to get professionals into the classroom quickly.
