More Was More for One Ruler in Qing Dynasty
By HOLLAND COTTER
CHICAGO - When it comes to Chinese art, museums tend to supersize us. The Guggenheim dished up 5,000 years of cultural history in 1998. The Art Institute of Chicago packed a whole religion into its Taoism bash two years later. By comparison, "Splendors of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign of Emperor Qianlong," at the Field Museum here, is spartan fare, covering the career of one ruler.
Believe me, though, we're not talking lean cuisine. Most of the 400 objects in the show, on loan from the Palace Museum in Beijing, date from the 18th century, when China, under the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), was in High Rococo mode. What the Qing wanted in court art was more: more ingenuity, more virtuosity, more bells and whistles, extra everything. When it came to scale, they went for extremes, the teensy and the colossal, cups the size of thimbles, jades the size of boulders. The Confucian middle way was not their way.
This is one reason the Forbidden City, a walled complex of apartments, offices, reception halls and temples in Beijing, the imperial capital, looked the way it did. Jammed and encrusted with decoration, it was tchotchke heaven. At least that's the impression conveyed by the environments reconstructed in this show, which include an imperial throne room and a Buddhist altar, and by individual items so extravagant as to amount to minienvironments in themselves, like a five-foot-high cloisonné elephant with a lamp on its back.
The Qing were foreigners to Han China, northern invaders who called themselves Manchus. They named their Chinese dynasty Qing, which means pure, though there was nothing pure about it. The Manchus were of mixed Mongolian, Korean, Chinese and Jurchen stock. The culture they inherited as conquerers incorporated Middle Eastern, Indian, Tibetan and European influences. The official coronation portrait of the emperor Qianlong, around whom this exhibition revolves, was painted by an Italian Jesuit priest.
Qianlong, was an interesting guy, a real master-of-the-universe type, and to talk about him is to crunch some impressive numbers. He reigned for nearly 60 years, from 1736 to 1795, and ruled nearly 300 million people in what was then the biggest and richest empire in the world. When he took the throne at 25 he already had eight wives and several children; he eventually supported more than 40 consorts. His intellectual commitments were no less demanding. He wrote more than 44,000 poems and thousands of essays. He was a musician (the qin, or zither, he used is in the show), a better-than-average calligrapher and an avid though not-so-hot painter. As a ruler he was thoroughly hands-on. He had a phenomenal memory for administrative details, signed off on every edict issued by his government and made more than 150 lengthy public relations tours of China, meeting, greeting and scrutinizing to keep provincial officials on their toes.
His interest in cultural history was both profound and pragmatic. He knew that for political credibility the Qing had to be closely associated with Chinese tradition. To this end he sponsored a project to have all surviving Chinese writing from the past assembled, copied and securely stored. The job took 300 scholars and 3,600 scribes 10 years to complete and filled some 4.2 million pages. As an act of conservation it was invaluable. At the same time, it allowed the emperor to survey China's literary history and edit it. He destroyed thousands of books he considered anti-imperialist, almost as many as he preserved.
He also amassed an art collection of hundreds of thousands of paintings, ceramics, jades, textiles, pieces of furniture and metal objects, some of great antiquity, others brand new commissions. Among the more spectacular made-to-order pieces were religious objects, from solid-gold table-top stupas to a fancy-dress version of a Tibetan lama's ritual robe. Immodestly he had himself depicted in paintings as the bodhisattva of wisdom, Manjushri.
Court apparel was another big-budget item, with everything custom made and minutely coded to reflect hierarchical standing. The number of pearls in a consort's crown indicated just where she fell in the pecking order, as did the number of "eyes" in the peacock feather a courtier wore in his cap. The emperor was intensely sensitive to any breech of protocol.
The show is particularly useful in pointing out how the Qing, despite their assimilationist Chinese-ness, asserted their Manchu identity and imposed it on their subjects. Under their rule all men in China had to adopt a Manchu-style pigtail coiffure. Manchu women were forbidden to have their feet bound, an emblem of femininity among the Han Chinese elite. In couture, wide Chinese sleeves were out; narrow Manchu sleeves with flares were in, as were equestrian-style boots that reminded the Manchus of their distant nomadic history.
That history reached its zenith with Qianlong but began to lose its luster well before the end of his rule. For all his strengths, Qianlong was no Manjushri. He grew more repressive with the years and took on corrupt and grasping advisers. There were more book-burnings. The social mood grew coarse and parochial. From a height of tremendous, world-conquering potential, the dynasty slipped into decline until 1911, when the last Qing emperor, who was also the last Chinese emperor, left the Forbidden City and its kingdom of collectibles behind.
Modern art historians, Chinese and Western, have long treated those collectibles with disdain, concentrating instead on another aspect of Qing period art, a scholar-artist painting tradition that continued from the Ming. Surely it means something that this exhibition, which continues through Sept. 12, is appearing at a museum of natural history, ethnology and anthropology, not a museum of "art." And in truth, although the Qing brought forms like jade-carving to a peak of technical finesse, for most 21st-century eyes, their more-is-more aesthetic is an acquired taste.
There is no better way to begin acquiring than through the exhibition catalog written by Chuimei Ho and Bennet Bronson, curators at the Field Museum, a sterling example of hard history set out with a storyteller's skill. The show is a good introduction too, but of a different kind. Crowded, theatrical, it offers a total sink-or-swim immersion in a consumerist culture as awesomely polished as it is absurd, where Classical China and Turandot-in-the-Forbidden-City meet. That the giant gift shop at the exit is almost as big as the show makes perfect sense. Very Qing. Very us.

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) -- Tim Berners-Lee, who received a
€1 million ($1.2 million) cash prize for creating the World Wide Web, says he would never have succeeded if he had charged money for his inventions.
"If I had tried to demand fees ... there would be no World Wide Web," Berners-Lee, 49, said Tuesday at a ceremony for winning the first Millennium Technology Prize. "There would be lots of small webs."
The prize committee agreed, citing the importance of Berners-Lee's decision never to commercialize or patent his contributions to the Internet technologies he had developed, and recognizing his revolutionary contribution to humanity's ability to communicate.
Berners-Lee, who is originally from Britain and was knighted last December, has mostly avoided both the fame and the fortune won by many of his Internet colleagues. Despite his prize, he remained modest about his achievements.
"I was just taking lots of things that already existed and added a little little bit," said Berners-Lee, who now runs the standard-setting World Wide Web Consortium from an office at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"Building the Web, I didn't do it all myself," he said. "The really exciting thing about it is that it was done by lots and lots of people, connected with this tremendous spirit."
Berners-Lee indeed took concepts that were well known to engineers since the 1960s, but it was he who saw the value of marrying them.
Pekka Tarjanne, chairman of the prize committee, said "no one doubts who the father of the World Wide Web is, except Berners-Lee himself."
Finnish President Tarja Halonen presented the biannual award, subsidized by the government. The cash prize is among the largest of its kind, and Berners-Lee is the first recipient.
The prize committee outlined the award to be given for "an outstanding innovation that directly promotes people's quality of life, is based on humane values and encourages sustainable economic development."
"Isn't this like a definition of the World Wide Web?" Tarjanne asked.
Berners-Lee first proposed the Web in 1989 while developing ways to control computers remotely at CERN, the European nuclear research lab near Geneva.
He never got the project formally approved, but his boss suggested he quietly tinker with it anyway.
He fleshed out the core communication protocols needed for transmitting Web pages: the HTTP, or hypertext transfer protocol, and the so-called markup language used to create them, HTML. By Christmas Day 1990, he finished the first browser, called simply "WorldWideWeb."
Although his inventions have undergone rapid changes since then, the underlying technology is precisely the same.
New project
His recent project -- which experts say is potentially as revolutionary as the World Wide Web itself -- is called the Semantic Web.
The project is an attempt to standardize how information is stored on the Internet and to organize automatically the jungle of data found today on the Net into a "web" of concepts.
By attaching meaning to data behind the scenes, computers can do a better job of searching for information.
"It is an exciting new development that we're making," he said.
In his acceptance speech, Berners-Lee focused on technology as an evolving process that was just in the beginning.
"All sorts of things, too long for me to list here, are still out there waiting to be done. ... There are so many new things to make, limited only by our imagination," he said.
"And I think it's important for anybody who's going through school or college wondering what to do, to remember that now."

All Out of Love By Air Supply -[Those Lyrics]
I am lying alone with my head on the phone
Thinking of you till it hurts
I know you're hurt too
but what else can we do
Tormented and torn apart
I wish I could carry your smile in my heart
For times when my life seems so low
It would make me believe what tomorrow could bring
When today doesn't really know, doesn't really know
CHORUS
I'm all out of love, I'm so lost without you
I know you were right, believing for so long
I'm all out of love, what am I without you
I can't be too late to say that
I was so wrong
I want you to come back and carry me home
Away from this long lonely nights
I'm reaching for you, are you feeling it too
Does the feeling seem oh, so right
And what would you say if I called on you now
And said that I can't hold on?
There's no easy way, it gets harder each day
Please love me or I'll be gone, I'll be gone
CHORUS
Ooh, what are you thinking of
What are you thinking of
What are you thinking of
what are you thinking of
CHORUS

Tell you what.
You know what?
Thats what you get的连读
Not if I.../Mind if I...
as long as/as well as的连读
How about if I...?
选项中的might/may/should have done/probably在很大程度上可能对,因为符合TOEFL听

(AlexLivesey/GettyImages) 卡洛斯 奎罗兹:替罪羊? The final games of the season were of particular interest if you enjoy watching the final twitches of a riddled corpse (Real Madrid), kick-boxing at its finest (Seville v Osasunsa) and teardrops exploding (Celta, Valladolid). Even the double winners Valencia couldn't hack it for their celebration turn-out, losing at home to party-poopers Albacete. But it's been that sort of season. Things have turned out more or less as expected - the flight reached its destination, but with plenty of turbulence along the way. And on the day after Real Madrid's fifth consecutive defeat, poor smoothie Carlos Quieroz is finally offered up on a plate to the supporters, howling for scapegoat blood. Hours later and Camacho's back - he of the sweaty armpits and parabolic gestures. When things go awry at Madrid they always phone for Camacho - the capital's Red Adair. Well - he's only ever spent 22 days there as a manager, the last time packing his bags in a huff and walking out when he failed to wrest the right promises and conditions - and there is little reason to assume that he will be any different this time. But when it's crisis time in the capital his name always gets bandied about. I was down there last week and had lunch with the sports' editor of El Pa¨ªs, the wise and witty Santiago Segurola. As he slurped down some wonderfully sizzling red peppers, I asked him what he thought of Camacho. 'The most overrated manager in Spanish history. Waste of space,' came the reply. So there you have it. Another Soccernet exclusive. Camacho's track record as a manager is certainly ordinary, save the Cup he just won at Benfica. But he shouts a lot. Queiroz didn't shout very much, ergo he wasn't a good manager. It's the sort of absurd reductionism into which Spanish football is too often dragged when its most potent imperial symbol, Real Madrid, goes to the dogs. It's not really the fault of Quieroz. It's the fault of those who seriously thought he could manage the club in the first place, given his lack of top-flight hands-on experience and given the eventual lack of support he was to receive. Maybe he really was just employed to make Beckham feel more at home. Whatever, it's been a sorry episode. Even sorrier were the scenes at Sevilla, where the home side needed to win in order to secure the remaining UEFA spot. Win they did, but the ensuing battle looked like the one in the Lord of The Rings that lasts for about two hours and which claims the lives of several thousand extras. Sevilla have not distinguished themselves this season for their Corinthian approach, and lie 18th in this season's final 'Fair Play' league - won, curiously enough, by relegated Murcia (relegated teams usually kick opponents more). Osasuna (which means 'Health' in Basque) finished in fair-play mid-table, but in terms of the real table they were in that interesting limbo state known as 'No jugando nada' (Not playing for anything) - a condition apparently exclusive to La Liga. The condition is shorthand in Spanish for two things: 1. 'Don't try if the other team are playing for something' or 2. 'Do try, but only if you've been paid by some other team to do so'. These are the famous 'maletines' (suitcases) that crop up every end of season in Spain, a metaphor for pay-offs from the clubs who need a result. Bakayoko: Sugar Ray Leonard (FiroFoto/GettyImages) In this case, the suitcase full of euros would have come from the direction of Atl¨¦tico Madrid, who needed Sevilla to lose. What seemed obvious, however, was that Osasuna had received no such incentive, but had decided to go for it anyway. There is some bad blood between the two sides from previous encounters, and Sevilla were clearly upset that the side from Navarre were not playing to the unspoken rules - i.e they were trying. This wasn't in the script at all, and Doctor Alfaro and company were less than chuffed. Osasuna, to be fair, were also putting it about, and the left-hook jab that Bakayoko proffered to Alfaro in the second half was worthy of Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime. The good Doc went to ground, but was up in a jiffy - a testament to his staying power or simple desire for revenge, but the melee was, by that time, so chaotically generalised that he could no longer find his assailant. The centre-back raged around for a while like a bull on amphetamines, slugging anything that happened to come across his path, before being dragged off by a security guard. Meanwhile, all around him was mayhem. When it all calmed down (sort of) Baptista scored his twentieth of the season and Sevilla deservedly claimed a UEFA Cup place - deservedly because they did let their best player (Reyes) go earlier in the season but have remained reasonably firm ever since. Down in the nether regions of the table, Luis Fernandez was immortalising himself in Espanyol's pantheon, saving a side that looked doomed after picking up a mere five points from the first ten games. They came bottom of the Fair Play league, but we'll overlook that for now. The increasingly eccentric Fernandez has done us all a favour by getting De La Peña to play again - on Sunday instrumental in the two goals. De La Peña is now Mr Chief Assist, making 13 goals this season - three more than Becks. The player he has most provided, Ra¨²l Tamudo, will not be going to Portugal despite scoring 19 this season, and neither will Valencia's Mista, scourge of Marseille and also a 19-goal man this season. Maybe Spain's manager S¨¢ez is right not to take them, but should one opt for reputation (Ra¨²l?) or players who are clearly on form? I've no idea. But the decision, as ever, will be judged retrospectively, depending on how Spain fare. Celta and Valladolid went down on the final day, accompanying the less famous Murcia. Celta may have established a record by being the first team to play the Champions League and be relegated in the same season, but maybe not. Answers on a postcard please. Their slide into mediocrity was unexpected, but was sure-fire proof of the fact that football is a state of confidence as opposed to mere ability. Barcelona's astonishing turn-around would seem to be further proof of this adage, although it is said that they employed a psychologist at Christmas to help re-focus the players. The person called in certainly earned his/her euros and may soon be receiving a call from Florentino P¨¦rez. Cañizares won the best goalie figures again this season (the Zamora trophy), but he did have a decent defence in front of him. Santiago Canizares: Top statto. (TonyMarshall/Empics) The best-supported team was Albacete, believe it or not, since their Carlos Belmonte stadium (capacity 17,000) was on average filled to 89% over the season. Valencia were second on 87% and Real Madrid 4th on 85%. Then again, a total of 286,000 folks watched Albacete at home this season, as opposed to the 1,281,000 who filled the expensive seats at the Bernab¨¦u, but anyway, interesting figures. With four games left in the Second Division, Levante, Numancia and Alav¨¦s look most likely to be in the top flight next season, and whereas the former and the latter look like they should survive without too much difficulty, Numancia may struggle. Down at the bottom, it's sad to see Las Palmas and Rayo Vallecano - not so long ago First Division clubs. Athletic Bilbao's 'Lionesses' won the Feminine Super Liga for the second consecutive season, which is as good a place as any to end, since their male counterparts get this column's vote for team of the season, for their strength of their convictions and for the example they continue to set. At least one of their two younger stars, Del Horno or Yeste should perhaps have gone to Portugal, but never mind. Their time will come. Will Spain's, forty years after their one and only international trophy? That's the next bit to look forward to. paintery 2004/5/31 Notes -[For Whom The Bell Tolls] 时间:2004-05-31 06:40 unnameable 1.Not to be named or identified 2.too sacred to be uttered gravel http://www.westpole.org/pics/cichlids/gravel.jpg ravioli Italian paste http://www.caterplanirl.com/rana/images/ravioli.gif halter 1 a : a rope or strap for leading or tying an animal b : a headstall usually with noseband and throatlatch to which a lead may be attached http://www.rdequinesupply.com/pix1/15520-halter-nylon-w-overlay-412.jpg 2 : a rope for hanging criminals : NOOSE ; also : death by hanging 3 : a woman's blouse that leaves the back, arms, and midriff bare and that is typically held in place by straps around the neck and across the back http://www.portraitartist.com/saltzman/halter.jpg paintery Introduction -[The Truth Of Fairy Tales] 时间:2004-05-27 21:40 paintery 发表于 21:40 | 阅读全文 | 评论(0) | 引用(Trackback0) | 编辑 I Knew I Loved You -[Those Lyrics] 时间:2004-05-24 15:53 SAVAGEGARDEN最温柔的情歌。 Maybe it's intuition But some things you just don't question Like in your eyes I see my future in an instant and there it goes I think I've found my best friend I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe I knew I loved you before I met you I think I dreamed you into life I knew I loved you before I met you I have been waiting all my life There's just no rhyme or reason only this sense of completion and in your eyes I see the missing pieces I'm searching for I think I found my way home I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe I knew I loved you before I met you I think I dreamed you into life I knew I loved you before I met you I have been waiting all my life A thousand angels dance around you I am complete now that I found you TOP OF THE WORLD -[Those Lyrics] 时间:2004-05-24 00:26 日剧BEGINNER(司法八人组)主题曲。 TOP OF THE WORLD来自美国流行音乐史上传奇中的传奇Carpenter乐队,斯人已去,仙乐尤存。 Such a feelin's comin' over me There is wonder in most everything I see Not a cloud in the sky Got the sun in my eyes And I won't be surprised if it's a dream Everything I want the world to be Is now coming true especially for me And the reason is clear It's because you are here You're the nearest thing to heaven that I've seen I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation And the only explanation I can find Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around Your love's put me at the top of the world Something in the wind has learned my name And it's tellin' me that things are not the same In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze There's a pleasin' sense of happiness for me There is only one wish on my mind When this day is through I hope that I will find That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me All I need will be mine if you are here I'm on the top of the world lookin' down on creation And the only explanation I can find Is the love that I've found ever since you've been around Your love's put me at the top of the world paintery Beckham sticks neck out for another tattoo -[Real Madrid] 时间:2004-05-22 22:29 David Beckham, shown in an April Real Madrid match, has set tongues clucking with his most recent tattoo. British newspapers on Saturday clucked their disapproval as they showed pictures of Beckham with the tattoo, his ninth, as he trained in Spain with Real Madrid team-mates. The tabloid Daily Mirror said the design, stretching from ear-to-ear, left the shaven-headed Beckham "looking more like a soccer thug than the England captain," while the top selling Sun newspaper said he had gone from "fab to yob." Beckham flew tattooist Louis Malloy to Madrid from Manchester on Thursday for the latest addition to his multi-million pound body.
