Not Later -- Now! by Mary Chen So, did we catch you? Are you procrastinating right now? You have homework to do, a test to study for, a chapter to read? But instead you're surfing the internet? Yeah, we uh¡ know the feeling. Everyone does. But allow us to light a tiny little fire under your butt. Here's a list of things to tell yourself next time you catch yourself putting off your work. Bookmark it and use it whenever you need to: Break it up into bite-size pieces: If the thought of doing all 20 of those Math problems is making your stomach turn, why not just do, say, five of them for now? Then give yourself a break (or do another assignment) and do another five, repeating until you're done. You can also break your work up into chunks of time, like 'I'll spend the next 20 minutes reading my History assignment, and then I'm allowed to take a 10 minute break for a glass of chocolate milk.' Egg timers are fun for that. Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect: Two of the biggest causes of procrastination are perfectionism and fear of failure. But wanting something to be perfect is no reason to put off starting it; we bet once you get into the groove you'll be surprised at how well you're doing. And even if you don't feel like you've reached 'perfection,' remember to give yourself a lot of credit for 'well-done' ¨C and done on time! And unfortunately, it also doesn't have to be fun: Let's face it, most of the time we procrastinate because we just don't want to do it. And we think that we need to be motivated in order to start. But in reality, motivation sometimes doesn't come until you've already dug into something and made some progress. Reality is also a place where sometimes we have to do stuff that's no fun. Them's the breaks. But at least when we're done doing the draggy stuff, we get to do fun stuff like call a friend or pal around online. So give it a shot. If you just absolutely can't get moving, tell yourself you're just going to do five minutes worth of work right now¡ getting started is almost always the hardest part. And keep in mind: the feeling you get from being done with your work is a jillion times more pleasant than the guilty feeling of putting it off. 2004-09-21 | Trackback(0) | ±à¼ ¿´ÁËÕâЩÎÄ×Ö£¬ÓÐÈË˵ÁËÒÔÏÂһЩ»°£º
