The New York deathsters reformed in 2002 and after spending the winter of 2003 recording their newest material, Souls to Deny is here for us to savor. So what has changed in the time Suffocation have been away?? Not a lot as far as death metal goes! The scene is still flooded and those few bands who do rise above the rest tend to stand out like a shining beacon. Suffocation stood out in their previous incarnation and their return with Souls to Deny shines just as brightly. Their sound has not changed a lot other than benefiting from newer recording techniques, which only serves to sharpen their breakneck time changes and enhance their brutally heavy riffs. Some of the work on show is truly breathtaking as it oozes technicality while remaining crushing, a feat every death band on the planet aspires to but very few achieve. With their welcome return Suffocation reinforce that with craft and musicianship the death metal genre can produce some truly stunning music.
