But not for Canadian schoolgirl Sarah Landry. She had a holiday full of ice and snow: She and her family travelled across Greenland! Starting just above the Arctic Circle (±±¼«È¦), the Landrys family used dogsleds (¹·ÀÑ©ÇÁ) and kites to cross the world's largest island. Sarah says there wasn't much to see during the long journey. "There is only snow, ice, and more snow." The family travelled 15 miles a day for 22 days, but went faster when strong winds pushed along their kites. Then the weather became too hot for the dogs to pull sleds during the day, so the family began travelling at night. The Landrys lived in tents (ÕÊÅñ), ate dried food, and took baths with heated water. When they weren't travelling, they played with kites and made snowmen. The family had a notebook computer and they could send and get e-mails even from Greenland's ice cap (±ùñ)! The road to the top was icy and dangerous. The difficult journey was worth (ÖµµÃµÄ) it when they reached the ice cap and saw the view. "Icebergs (±ùɽ)were as bright as the rising sun." Now Sarah and her family have returned home, but they're already talking about their next plan. Next holiday, they are going to the South Pole. He likes to hide his eyes behind his hair. He doesn't smile very often. However, talk to him about music and he'll have a lot to say. This is Jay Chou (ÖܽÜÂ×), the 24-year-old Taiwanese pop king. His fans are excited as he will sing songs from his new album (³ªÆ¬), "Ye Huimei", in Beijing on September 12. The album was released (·¢ÐÐ) in July and is named after his mother. Quiet boy with a big talent Chou grew up just with his mother. He did not talk much and did badly in many school subjects. His mother noticed the boy's special interest in music and sent him to learn piano when he was only three years old. He loved it and kept on practising. His talent (Ì츳) was found by Jacky Wu (Îâ×ÚÏÜ) at a competition. Now Chou is a famous Chinese pop-star, loved for his rap (˵³ª) and R&B music (À¶µ÷ÒôÀÖ). Chou is not very handsome, even according to his female fans. He does not speak clearly when he sings or talks. But the singer has huge crowds of fans. "He is really good at music. It makes him attractive to me," said Liu Jiajun, a Junior 2 student at No 101 Middle School in Beijing. "He is true to himself. He never follows others," said Zhang Yujie, a Junior 1 girl at Huaibei Middle School in Sihong, Jiangsu Province. During the last three days of the term, we have six exams. My easiest exam was maths. All of its questions were from earlier exams. The biology (ÉúÎï) exam was hard. At first, I thought I had failed (²»¼°¸ñ) it. It asked lots of things we never studied in class, so we could use our textbooks. But there wasn't enough time to check every question. I guessed on many of them. But my teacher said I did well. On the career planning and computer applications (Ö°Òµ¹æ»®ÓëµçÄÔÓ¦ÓÃ) exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation (»ÃµÆÑÝʾ), a book report and a class evaluation (ÆÀ¼Û). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn't think so much. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games. I don't think I did very well on the English exam. We had to write an essay (¶ÌÎÄ) about books we've read in class. But I didn't study enough. At our school, we can " test out (ÃâÐÞ)" of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take a class' exam. If they pass, they don't have to take the class. I tested out of both computer and health classes. Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes go for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects (ÏîÄ¿) at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it's all over, and now it's the summer holiday. For my classmates, it will be two and a half months of fun without school or homework. But I'm a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids' free time: more homework! Yang, a Junior 2 at Nantong Middle School in Nantong, Jiangsu, will put out her own CD in late August. The album still doesn't have a name. Although the words of the songs were written by other people, Yang wrote the music for every song on the album. And at age 14, she is one of the youngest kids to put out their own music in China! "It makes me happy to see the songs change from lines on paper to sounds,"" she said. Yang may be young, but she is not new to making music. She began writing it when she was only 6 years old. After only half a year, one of her songs was in a Guangzhou magazine (ÔÓÖ¾). Since then, she has made hundreds of songs. Some are about school; others are thoughts on life. One of them, "White Candle," was on Nantong radio when many people had SARS last year. Yang has her own website. To learn more about her, visit it at: www.nt-yangjing.com. You can choose from lots of places, like Huangshan Mountain, the Mogao Caves, the old city of Pingyao or the old town of Lijiang. Where did these great ideas come from? They're from a list called the World Heritage (ÒŲú) List. China is a country with a very long history, a rich culture and many beautiful places. There are 29 World Heritage Sites in China. China's first six places were put on the list in 1987. And it hasn't stopped. Last year, the Three Parallel Rivers in Yunnan became the newest World Heritage Site. There are three different kinds of World Heritage Sites: natural (×ÔÈ»µÄ), cultural (ÎÄ»¯µÄ) and mixed (»ìºÏµÄ). Cultural sites are places like ruins (ÒÅÖ·) and other things people made or built long ago. Natural sites are things like living things or scenery (·ç¾°) that the Earth made by itself. Mixed sites are a bit natural and a bit cultural. Below we'll introduce some of the beautiful sites to you: Jiuzhaigou Valley Natural site Jiuzhaigou Valley is in the northern part of Sichuan Province and goes up higher than 4,800 metres. Its waterfalls are quite beautiful. About 140 different kinds of birds live in the valley, and many different kinds of animals live there, too, like the giant panda. Potala Palace, Lhasa Cultural site The Potala Palace has been the winter palace of the Dalai Lama since the 7th century. It's an important place for Tibetan Buddhism (²Ø´«·ð½Ì). The White and Red Palace is built on Red Mountain in the centre of Lhasa Valley, as high as 3,700 metres. Wuyi Mountain Natural and Cultural (Mixed) site In Fujian Province, Wuyi Mountain is the most famous mountain in southeast China. It has the beautiful gorges (Ï¿¹È) of the Nine Bend River (¾ÅÇúºÓ) and many very old temples (ÃíÓî) and relics (ÎÄÎï). The temples are the home of neo-Confucianism (ÐÂÈå¼ÒÖ÷Òå), which has been a part of East Asian culture since the 11th century.
