The prompt books Dickens used in the Public Readings were invaluable to the outcome of a performance as they came complete with Dicken's own stage directions. For each new reading, Dickens comprised an accompanying prompt book, In most accounts these texts were unlike the original texts with which a reader might have been familiar both in content and in appearance. The content of a prompt copy was largely dictated by the two-hour schedule Dickens liked to adhere to for each reading. It was necessary as a result to do away with all but the most pertinent or entertaining passages. The most common practice Dickens employed to facilitate abbreviation was the climination of superfluous descriptions of people and places, as well as reference to bystanders and irrelevant characters. It became unnecessary for Dickens to explain a character's attitude or expression since he had become to character on stage and could simply act it out.
