a free road ahead 2004/06/02 到 2004/07/30 Life is full of ups and downs. Francis Crick
2004-07-30 12:00 Francis H. C. Crick, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA, the genetic blueprint for life, and the leading molecular biologist of his age, died on Wednesday night in a hospital in San Diego. He was 88. Dr. Crick laid the foundations of molecular biology in a sustained burst of creativity that began in 1953 with the discovery of the structure of DNA, the hereditary material, in Cambridge, England, and ended about 13 years later with the subject's primary problems solved, most of them either by Dr. Crick or by scientists in his circle. The discovery of the structure of DNA resolved longstanding questions about the nature of the hereditary material and the manner in which it is copied as one generation succeeds another. The proposal for the structure, almost immediately accepted, was electrifying to scientists not only because of its inherent elegance but also because it showed how biology, evolution and the nature of life itself could ultimately be explained in terms of physics and chemistry. Indeed, the desire to replace religious with rational explanations of life was a principal motivation of Dr. Crick's career. So central is DNA to biology that the names of Francis H. C. Crick and James D. Watson, his American colleague in the discovery, may be remembered as long as those of Darwin and Mendel, the architects of the two pillars of modern biology, the theory of evolution and the laws of genetics. Want to learn more about DNA ? And thanks Shining for reminding me that I should point out the source of the above article. I just got the news from NYTimes.
Can I buy you a drink? 女:Actually I'd rather have the money. 男:Can I have your name? 女:Why? Don't you already have one? 男:I'm a photographer. I've been looking for a face like yours. 女:I'm a plastic surgeon. I've been looking for a face like yours. 男:Is this seat empty? 女:Yes, and this one will be if you sit down. 男:Haven't I seen you some place before? 女:Yes. That's why I don't go there anymore. 男:Will you go out with me this Saturday? 女:Sorry. I'm having a headache this weekend. 男:I think I could make you very happy. 女:Why? Are you leaving?

Last Way Out Of Here by Paloalto Running faster through the trees/ Feeling nothing underneath Your eyes are open wide/ Let it come in... 2004-07-24 12:03 At about 10 a.m. I went to a bookstore by riding bicycle. I took a short cut by going through TJ University from the North Gate to the East one. I noticed that the square with modern style fountains and little bridges has been constructed. The lawn is neat and smooth. The water in the lake is green and limpid. In the center of the square stands a pavilion. Founded in 1895 Tianjin University is the earliest university in China. Though I have passed by the campus for many times, I've never looked at the pavilion carefully. Stepping into the pavilion I saw a diploma engraved on the wall. Why is it put on there? I thought about this question. When I read the words on the wall I got to know that it is the first diploma in China, awarded to Wang Chonghui in 1900. On the other side the school song is put on the wall "花堤蔼蔼,北运滔滔,巍巍学府北洋高..." The lyric encourage millions of students to be diligent. I also took a book to read when my niece playing at the children's activity area. But I don't know when I got the habit of watching strangers around me:naive and lovely children playing happily, adults chatting, waiters and waitress working hard... Though the book I read is also interesting, I prefer watching others how they act, listening what they are talking about without being perceived. I don't understand why I enjoy doing that. Maybe I seem to be lonely? In the evening I watched the F1 Racing on TV.Schumacher scored his eightieth career victory and his tenth of the season as Ferrari once again scored a strategy triumph over their rivals. These great achievements make some think the season becomes dull coz there is no doubt that Michael will be the season champion, while others still show interest in how many victories he will gain in all in the end of this season. Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs 的Stay. Post by Halle @ 22:37 Summer Wind

2004-07-21 10:17 I saw this movie last night. It's about that sweet dreams come ture. A 13 year old girl plays a game on her 13th birthday and wakes up the next day as a 30 year old woman. We are fish in a barrel. 比如当描述事情很容易做的时候,就可以说“It’s like shooting fish in a barrel.” There are plenty more fish in the sea. It's time to fish or cut bait. 这里的鸡头就可以说成是a big fish in a small pond(小池塘里的大鱼);而“凤尾”似乎就应该是“a small fish in a big pond”了。

2004-07-07 23:35 People around China have held various activities to mark the 67th anniversary of the July 7 Lugou Bridge Incident on Wednesday. More than 100 new members of t he Communist Party of China (CPC) from the graduates institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences took an oath in a joining-CPC ceremony Wednesday morning at the Memorial Hall of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945), which is situated near the Lugou Bridge, southwest of Beijing proper. On July 7, 1937, the intruding Japanese forces assaulted Lugou Bridge or Lugouqiao (known as the Marco Polo Bridge), and Chinese defending soldiers responded by gun fire. This has been known as the world-famous Lugou Bridge Incident, which marked the beginning of Japan's all-out aggression against China as well as of China's War of Resistance to Japan. Thereafter July 7 became the very day for marking the incident. Fighting courageously and uninterruptedly against Japanese aggressor troops for eight straight years, Chinese people the final victory on August 15, 1945 when Japan surrendered unconditionally. Xiong Zhijian, who attended Wednesday's ceremony, cited July 7 as a day that is worthy of being remembered. "I feel I take the responsibility to make my due contributions to building my motherland into a thriving and prosperous country and to make contributions to the world peace." Wang Xinhua, curator of the memorial hall, said "We mark the war that occurred 67 years ago not for the purpose of instigating hate, but precisely for a peaceful world." "Taking a correct attitude toward history helps press ahead with the growth of Sino-Japanese friendly relations and world peace," Wang said. The commemoration day of the July 7 Incident is also a day impressed deeply in the mind of the people of the northeastern China region, which consists of three provinces of Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, and which was overridden by Japanese invaders during World War II. To date, chemical weapons abandoned by the Japanese troops still jeopardized the lives of local people. On August 4, 2003, a mustard gas leak from chemical weapons abandoned by Japanese invaders poisoned 43 residents in Qiqihar, one of whom died. As of August last year, 775 bombs and gas bombs left over by Japanese troops had been discovered in the city. An expert of history in Qiqihar city said that history could not be evaded and invaders could not evade punishment for their towering crimes, adding that only after all the chemical weapons discarded by Japanese invaders were destroyed, can Chinese people live a peaceful life. In east China's Jiangsu province, young volunteers from prestigious Nanjing University, Nanjing Teachers University and other institutions of higher learning have trekked to more than 30 villages under the administration of Nanjing, the provincial capital, to seek witnesses of the Nanjing Massacre and collect evidence and testimony for the Nanjing Massacre. The Nanjing Massacre occurred in December 1937 when the Japanese intruders occupied Nanjing, the then capital of China. More than 300,000 Chinese were slain in the slaughter. To remind people of the slaughter, a book exposing the atrocities of Japanese invaders in the massacre has been published in Nanjing. Zhu Chengshan, curator of the memorial hall of Chinese people who were killed in the massacre, noted the book was not only crucial historical material for studying the Nanjing Massacre, but also irrefutable evidence beating back Japan's right-wing forces who deny the slaughter. 2004-07-05 17:52 Andy Roddick, after his first Wimbledon final, promised: "All is not lost because I lost today. I still had a hell of a run and proved Roger is not invincible, but he is pretty close." The Wimbledon No.2 seed won the first set with his attacking game plan. "I was just taking it to him," he said. "I wasn't wanting to get in rallies where he could do his thing, come up with spectacular stuff. I went out and I tried to take it to him. I was successful most of the time. And then a couple of key points I wasn't. That was about the difference in the match. I didn't want him to control anything out there. I wanted to play the match on my terms." Despite losing the final, the American said: "I'm growing more confident in my abilities. I do have a backhand and can hit it well. That's not a shock any more, at least not to me. Volleying is still an area where I can try to improve more but I think that progress has been made. "I proved a lot to myself today. I thought I took it to him and played the game the way I wanted to. I just came up short. It was a couple of points here and there." Roddick revelled in the occasion of playing in a Wimbledon final. "I went out there and felt great. I had so much fun playing that match because it was such a grudge match of one versus two," he said. "It was nice to get out there. It was great. There is no place like it. That's the most prestigious court that I'll ever have the chance to play on. To compete in a final and know there's some kid out there [in the US] watching me at 'Breakfast at Wimbledon' the way I used to, it's a pretty cool feeling." Praising his Swiss conqueror, he said: "Not only is he fast when he gets to the ball, you can have no play on it and make something out of it. I think he is unparalleled as far as that skill goes. A couple of times he picked them off his shoe strings. Definitely, he is great at doing that and keeping himself alive in points. He has an aura about him, there's no doubt." The defeated finalist joked about the traditional Wimbledon Champions' dinner that is attended by the Men's and Women's Champions. "I just want to know how long Maria Sharapova's skirt is going to be. Is it going to be short? Is it going to be long? I'm disappointed I won't get to see that. I might just sneak in and crash the party. I'll bring the beer man, let's go." Rain Saved Me, Says Federer The bad weather that plagued The Championships was, in the end, the factor that made the crucial difference to Roger Federer's defence of his Gentlemen's Singles title. After defeating Andy Roddick 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, the Swiss explained that when rain stopped the play in the third set when he was trailing 4-2, the half-hour break gave him the opportunity to re-evaluate his tactics. He changed his game and took control to win Wimbledon for the second time."Andy was playing good tennis," said Federer. "He was putting me under pressure and was a better player up till then. I couldn't really play the way I wanted to. I thought maybe starting to serve and volley would win me some free points and not make me play a long rally every time, because that was actually the thing that was killing me. From the baseline, he was taking a lot of risks on my serve."It makes me extremely happy and proud that I made the right choice at such a moment." Federer said he expected Roddick to attack him with every weapon at his command from the start of the match, but that there was little he could do about it in the first set."He was serving too big. He was serving 10 miles an hour quicker in the beginning than in the rest of the match. That was the key to his success in the first set, serving too big for me. He was even serving second serves at 120 miles an hour." This was Federer's third victory in three Grand Slam finals. "I have a very good winning percentage in finals," he agreed. "It seems like I can get my act together at the right time and even stay calm. After winning the Australian Open this year I decided that for me winners stay and losers go. I don't want to be one of those who goes." Federer admitted he was nervous when he served for the match at 5-4 in the fourth set. "But somehow, my reactions after the match were very similar to last year. I fell to my knees and started to cry again because I couldn't believe it. But somehow I feel even more joy this year because I had so much pressure going into this tournament. Now, to see my name on the champions' board twice in a row, I get more joy out of this." Federer said his next goal was to do well at the Athens Olympics. "It has always been a dream for me to represent my country, to win a medal. I came so close at the Olympics four years ago. I'm going there hoping to maybe do one step better." The Wimbledon champion also feels there remains room for improvement in his game. "I feel I can serve and volley more. It has always been my dream to play better at the net. I'm not bad, but I definitely feel there is room for improvement. But it's just so hard for me to do so because my opponents are so incredibly tough on returns and second passing shots." Post by Halle @ 17:52 Sharapova Stuns Serena to Win Title
2004-07-03 23:45 Russian teenage sensation Maria Sharapova lifted her first Grand Slam crown on Saturday by pulling off a convincing two-set victory over title holding American Serena Williams. The 17-year-old Russian, already second youngest Wimbledon finalist in the Open era behind Swiss Martina Hingis, out hit Williams 6-1 and 6-4 to become the second Russian woman to win a Grand Slams title. Anastasia Myskina was the first Russian woman to ever win a Grand Slam title after beating fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in the all-Russian final of this year's French Open. Having realized her victory over Williams, Sharapova knelt down on the court with hands covering her face in disbelief, before running up to the stand to meet his father for the great joy. Williams, six-time Grand Slam winner, used to be too much for her opponent but in Saturday's final she found herself just unable to match the leggy blonde teenager. Sharapova, who was playing her second Wimbledon, made the final after coming back from one set down to see off American veteran Lindsay Davenport in Thursday's semifinal, which was interrupted by rain. Sharapova had benefited from the rain delay, after which she regrouped to dispose of convincingly Davenport, the 1999 Wimbledon champion. But on sunny Saturday, Sharapova just need not the blessing of rain and came out stronger to put Williams on her back foot. Sharapova served quite well and outhit williams from the baseline, while Williams was pressured to make a string of frustrating forehand errors. Williams, two-times Wimbledon champion, made the final after surviving a determined resistence from Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmoin the semifinal. It is the first time for Williams to reach the final of a GrandSlam since she came back from an 8-month absence due to a knee operation in August. Williams had been bidding to become only the ninth woman to have won three or more straight Wimbledon singles titles. "Thank for giving me a tough match, but sorry I do win today," Sharapova said at the award ceremony. "Sorry for taking the trophy from you for one year," she said.

2004-06-29 22:52 I heard some nice old songs on CIR music when I was in Beijing last week. " You Are So Beautiful" is one of them. It was written in 70's last century by British singer Joe Cocker. I have no way to find the link of the song performed by Joe, but I've got the same song by Kenny Rogers, who is also one of my favorite singers. You are so beautiful to me You are so beautiful to me Can't you see You're everything I hoped for You're everything I need You are so beautiful to me You are so beautiful to me You are so beautiful to me Can't you see You're everything I hoped for You're every, everything I need You are so beautiful to me Post by Halle @ 22:52 Pipa
2004-06-26 11:31 The pipa is a four stringed lute with a pear-shaped body. Its short, bent neck has 30 frets which extend onto the soundboard, offering a wide range (3.5 octavos). This instrument appears in texts dating up to the second century B.C. There are a lot of written texts of the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) about pipa music played and the stories that inspired the composition for those pipa pieces. Since the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the pipa is one of the most popular Chinese instruments, and has maintained its appeal in solo as well as chamber genres. The pipa technique is characterised by spectacular finger dexterity and virtuosi programmatic effects. Rolls, slaps, pizzicato, harmonics and noises are often combined into extensive tone poems vividly describing famous battles or other exciting scenes. The instrument is also capable of more lyrical effects in pieces inspired by poetry, landscapes and historical themes. Pipa music has been loved by Chinese people through centuries and there used to be a large repertoire of pipa music, a lot of them were lost, and some of them were handed down from generation to generation through individual artists and scholars. I got 2 pieces of Pipa music from the album called Spell of love is performenced by Shirley Lu, who is also a famous actress in Taiwan. The Pipa music are well combined with the sound of western instruments. Click here to know more about Pipa Post by Halle @ 11:31 继续培训与漫画

2004-06-19 12:36 I've never taught a course in Shakespeare, and for many good reasons I probably never will. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy or admire him. Now and again I muse a bit on his "Romeo and Juliet" probably because, like most people, I love a good love story. "For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo," isn't that how the line goes? But wait just a minute. Why "woe?" I thought this was supposed to be a love story, not a sad story! It seems to me that some of life's toughest mysteries are often revealed precisely at the point where sadness and love meet, like the special sadness that results in the passing away of a loved one. We care for another person, so when he or she dies, we die a little too. Sooner or later it happens to all of us, even if our name isn't Romeo or Juliet. Let me ask you a question - What do you think is the single most important issue for aged people in China today? What is the one thing our youth think and worry about more than anything else? I believe the answer is friendship. Notice I did not say "love", not yet at least, and surely not romantic love of the Romeo and Juliet variety. Romantic love does not come first on the list. Friends are first. Others may well disagree. After all, a host of concerns take centre stage in public discussions of young people and their tensions in China today. We hear so much about young people's anxiety about the future, or fear of failure in entrance examinations, or their struggles with drugs and alcohol or premarital sex . But friends are on their minds more than anything else, this I truly believe. Luckily, deep and intensely felt emotions about friends are not confined by age markers. We need friends in life when we're four years old and when we're 24, 34 and 94 too. And we all need friends of different ages and different backgrounds. Just recently a local basketball star died in an automobile accident. That death made headlines for many reasons, but my words today look at the story within the story of that sad loss. In a game soon after the tragic crash, one of the basketball player's teammates wore the victim's number on his uniform as a sign of mourning. Officials of the local basketball association were thrown into a dilemma because they wanted to retire that number, also as a symbol of sadness for the fallen star. The teammate held out however, and quietly insisted that he would defy his superiors' wishes. "I want to wear his number one last time," he said, "because I'm dedicating this game to him. He was my friend, and this game tonight, I play for him!" he pledged. At first glance such a gesture might appear to be showy, or even downright theatrical. But not this time, for the deceased basketball hero really was his friend, and a close friend at that. One man was Chinese, the other a Westerner, making the friendship even more special. There's a notion in the air that professional athletes from overseas find it difficult or even impossible to make good friends with their Chinese teammates. The familiar old barriers prove to be too formidable
- squabbles about salaries, differences in social and family backgrounds, variances in cultural views about athletic performance, differences in language. The reasons cited go on and on. If we want them to, if we allow them to, friendships can form. Well, friendships do form. And they can form in ways and with people we don't expect. Every friend in our life is a beautiful gift, and perhaps it is true that friends in unexpected places are the greatest gifts of all. I was uncertain about opening these words today with a reference to Romeo and Juliet, for although I'm a romantic at heart, I'm a firm believer in the gospel of many ways. There are many ways of loving, this I have learned in my life, and many ways too of being a friend. The athletes spoken of above cared about each other. They were friends, and though it was not a friendship that would warrant the words "parting is such sweet sorrow," spoken by our literary characters, they shared a deep sense of love, and that should speak to us. It's not wise at all to only talk of love in a romantic or sexual sense. It is not true that only "people in love" or only a young man and woman, or only people physically involved with one another, would know the happiness or the pain of loving somebody. Love is much bigger than all those silly little categories. There are simply many ways of loving, and many ways to be a friend. Among all those other problems in our collective lives, let's not forget that very important truth. 2004-06-08 23:08 I got my passport yesterday morning. But my feeling was not good. It's not an exciting thing to me at all. Because it means I will probably have to quit my current job soon, go to a distant place. Though I'm keen to have a change and to do something different in my life, when the time passes day by day, many specific questions have to be thought about, such as whether I submit my resignation letter before I get the visa, or whether I should keep my personal file in my current working place...What bothersome problems! I just intend to quit my job, do not want to consider too much; but my parents they want stability in my life. I feel I'm limited and so weak. I have no way to keep my mood good these days. I keep surfing online for long time, searching good articles and music, then reply them on bbs. Only in this way can I try to forget all the troubles for a short moment. I don't like to quarrel with them and I know they are the persons who care about me most in the world. Actually, what I want to get from my parents is their encouragement and support. Because I really don't know where my future lies, when the rainbow in my life will occur. All what I know is that I have to follow the ideas in the deep of my heart, and obey my own belief.I believe the saying,"Nothing is impossible to a willing heart". 2004-06-07 19:55 Gaston Gaudio claimed one of the most unlikely Grand Slam victories in history Sunday when he saved two match points to defeat fellow Argentine Guillermo Coria 0-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 8-6 in a Roland Garros final of wildly-fluctuating fortunes. Coria won 11 of the first 12 games of the match and seemed destined to extend his imposing clay record to 49 wins from his past 51 matches. But unseeded Gaudio eked out the third set and at 1-1 in the fourth set Coria's chances were rocked by cramps in his left leg which robbed him of his bliserting court coverage and forced him to serve at half pace. Gaudio saved two match points when Coria served for the match for a second time at 6-5 in the fifth. "This is like a movie for me," Gaudio said. 2004-06-07 19:49 Leaders from 16 countries gathered for ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of D-Day. The historic landing on the beaches of Normandy was not only a key turning point in World War Two. Sunday's ceremony is likely to be the last reunion of its kind for many of the survivors. French President Jacques Chirac made a speech expressing gratitude and respect for those who fought and died for the liberation of Europe. Jacques Chirac said, "At this auspicious moment, as we gather today on these Normandy beaches with the same emotion, history is again in the making. Nations and peoples who yesterday were divided by the clash of arms, stand united in silence, remembrance and reflection. Former combatants and enemies are moved by the same impetus, in tribute to men, sacrifice and the blood that was shed." Post by Halle @ 19:49 College entrance exams kick-off
2004-06-07 19:43 China's annual college entrance examinations have just got underway. For millions of high school graduates and their parents from across the country, this big day marks a crucial turning point in their life. For them, the success in the exam means quality university education and one step closer to an admirable career. Numerous families are in anxious anticipation of their children's good performance. The highly-demanding tests were launched on Monday morning, coinciding with the rush hour of a busy work-day. To allay the anxiety over traffic, major cities like Beijing and Guangzhou increased the number of police officers patrolling outside designated exam venues. The education departments also made efforts to ease students’feelings. Unlike their rigid and oppressive look in the past, many classrooms were transformed into a comfortable and friendly environment. Fresh potted flowers and heart-warming sign boards here and there are reminding students to calm down and be concentrated. Some cities are even requiring female examiners to put aside their high-heels for a couple of days, to keep the classrooms as quiet as possible. Hot water is in steady supply. Post by Halle @ 19:43 《绿袖子》
Alas my love, you do me wrong To cast me off discourteously I have loved you all so long 与卿相依,地老天荒。 Delighting in your company Greensleeves was all my joy Greensleeves was my delight Greensleeves was my heart of gold And who but my Lady Greensleeves I have been ready at your hand To grant whatever you would crave I have both waged life and land Your love and good will for to have 伊人隔尘,我亦无望。 Thou couldst desire no earthly thing But still thou hadst it readily Thy music still to play and sing And yet thou wouldst not love me 绿袖去矣,付与流觞。 Greensleeves now farewell adieu God I pray to prosper thee For I am still thy lover true Come once again and love me Post by Halle @ 20:31 怀念
