Architectural design I & II (12 credits each) This whole-year course is devoted to developing an appreciation and understanding of the fundamentals of human activity and physical imperatives through field-work and projects at a level of critical response where students can draw upon their own experience. Exercises in environmental studies and CAAD in an appropriate context and with an emphasis on the ability to define space, together with group discussions on related issues of shelter, society, and design will form the basis of the year’s work. 建筑历史与理论1 ARCH1003. History and theory of architecture I (3 credits) A general survey course on Chinese architecture, city planning and Chinese garden with reference to culture and history. It deals with basic knowledge such as philosophies and concepts, spatial analysis, social, environmental and cultural influences, symbolic meanings, building types, materials and construction techniques. 建筑历史与理论2 ARCH1004. History and theory of architecture II (3 credits) This introductory course in the first year deals with a critical survey with reference to factors covering the essential characteristics of western architecture from Greek, Roman to Christian which form the basis on which Modern architecture was developed or a reaction to it. The purpose of the course is to provide students with an understanding via the culture and tradition that led to the development of Modern architecture from 1900s. It aims to give an awareness that History and theory of architecture is a coherent cultural entity and to enable students to understand the relevance of history in design. 建筑原理(建造技术) ARCH1005. Principles of buildings I (3 credits) This course offers an introduction to the basic knowledge in design and construction process, with emphasis upon the principles, basic elements, materials, details, structure and form. Site visits and laboratory assignments form an integral part of the learning process. Case studies involving real projects will be conducted. 建筑原理(建筑物理环境) ARCH1006. Principles of buildings II (3 credits) The environmental issues of a building are introduced from the macroscopic to the microscopic environment. Prime physical governing factors are examined in relation to the needs of the occupants of the building. Laboratory work and site investigation for carrying out solar design for buildings using physical solar design tools as well as related software will be conducted. Visual communications I (3 credits) This course covers exercises in two- and three-dimensional spatial elements, i.e. dynamics of visual form; perspectives, projections and basic graphic techniques. Visual communications II (3 credits) This course is an introduction to digital design media and its use for visual communication in architecture. Architecture and design appreciation I & II (3 credits each) These two courses aim to introduce architecture and design to beginning undergraduate students. They assume no previous knowledge or training in the subject and serves to stimulate interests in understanding the relationship between human and the physically designed and built environment. Each course is structured to take advantage of the guest lectures offered by the Department. Students are also encouraged to expand and consolidate their linguistic competence in relation to the language and concepts of their discipline. Architectural Design III & IV (12 credits each) This whole-year course focuses on environmental and spatial considerations with emphasis on the integration of building technology in design and the use of digital media in conceptualizing and presenting design ideas. The course aims at developing both an awareness of architecture within a community environment and an ability to apply architectural language in design. A study of a community will be made paying particular attention to its architectural character and context. This study, which includes basic site survey, will form the basis of ensuing design projects, sketch designs and field studies. Field trips form an integral part of the course. History and Theory of Architecture III (3 credits) This course develops from first year’s introductory course of Chinese Architecture, City Planning and Chinese Gardens with emphasis on the integration of theory and principles related to form and space, aesthetics, technology, ideology and social-culture contexts. History and Theory of Architecture IV (3 credits) A continuation of the first-year history course which covers periods of western architecture to the 18th century. Building Technology I (3 credits) This course introduces more complex aspects of construction techniques and materials. Building Technology II (3 credits) Basic building services, lighting and acoustics will be covered in an integrated approach with structures and construction techniques with emphasis on site visits and technical studies. 建筑表现3(电脑媒体) ARCH2007. Visual Communications III (3 credits) This course is a further study in using digital media for architectural design and design communication. Techniques for modeling, visualizing, documenting and presenting designs are studied in depth along with underlying principles. Relationship between traditional and digital media in design is also critically examined. 建筑表现4(非电脑媒体) ARCH2008. Visual Communications IV (3 credits) The course is an extension of Visual Communications I dealing with fundamental areas of visual enquiry. Specialized options such as photography, pen and ink, line drawings, life and figure drawings, Chinese calligraphy and painting are offered. 城市设计1(城市设计原理) ARCH2011. Urbanism I: urban design (3 credits) This course offers a comparative study of the history of urban design. The course covers the history of urban design from the earliest cities to the present day. It will introduce the process of urban design, examine planning theories, and synthesize urban morphology (opportunities and constraints of various urban forms). Field trips form an integral part of the course. 城市设计2(场地设计) ARCH2012. Urbanism II: site planning (3 credits) A general survey of the history, theory and practice of site planning and an introduction to relevant problems in urban design and planning. Writing skills for Architecture students (3 credits) This course aims to develop students’ awareness of good writing strategies within the context of an Architecture-based project. The focus is on developing clear, well-organized texts with self- and peer-editing techniques for effective collaborative writing. Students are also encouraged to take a critical, evaluative approach towards text in their web-based assignments. Assessment is wholly by coursework. 第三年 THIRD YEAR 建筑设计5,6 ARCH3001 & ARCH3002. Architectural design V & VI (15 credits each) The whole-year course places emphasis on the development of a design ability to organize building processes of medium complexity within a social and economic framework and in the environmental context of Hong Kong. The course culminates with a comprehensive design project in depth and is assessed by an oral examination. Other design projects, measured drawings and sketch designs supplement the main coursework. Pre-requisites: ARCH2001 & ARCH2002 建筑历史与理论5 ARCH3003. History and theory of architecture V (3 credits) [Architecture of Japan and the West] This course is concerned primarily with the aesthetics and cultural significance recognized in the architecture of Japan and the western world. Climatic conditions, construction materials and technology are compared. The course also discusses the differences in aesthetics based on proportional systems, the sense of private and public territory, as well as some peculiarities found in Japanese traditional and contemporary culture. 建筑历史与理论6 ARCH3004. History and theory of architecture VI (3 credits) [The rise of modernism: Western Architecture 1700-1900] This is a survey course on the history of western architecture from the beginning of Enlightenment to the rise of Modernism in the 20th Century. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of architecture in the social, economic and political contexts of Europe and North America during this period and its significance within the historical development of modern culture. 建筑结构1 ARCH3005. Building structures I (3 credits) This course covers structural philosophy and morphology of multi-storied structures as well as spatial-form resisting structures. Local and international issues and case studies relating to these structural concepts are also discussed. 建筑结构2 ARCH3006. Building structures II (3 credits) This course covers the investigation and general behaviour of soils; shallow and deep foundations; and retaining structures. A discussion of relevant geotechnical issues and case studies are also included in the course. 建筑设计服务1 ARCH3007. Building services I (3 credits) Building services in medium rise and multifunctional buildings and their applications according to Hong Kong applications are taught. Integration with other environmental considerations is discussed and exercised through case studies and studio projects. 建筑设计服务2 ARCH3008. Building services II (3 credits) Building services and environmental considerations in high rise and complex buildings are discussed. Current international and local issues on building environmental control technologies are also highlighted and illustrated in lectures, site visits, case studies and studio design projects. 建筑技术与材料1 ARCH3009. Building technology and materials I (3 credits) This course deals with construction mainly in a local context. Various trades of construction are discussed. Emphasis is made on the development of detailing integrated with local building regulations for the overall design and planning of buildings. Relevant site visits are arranged to facilitate understanding of construction works. 建筑技术与材料2 ARCH3010. Building technology and materials II (3 credits) This course deals with the building enclosure in design and construction aspects. Reference is made mainly to local buildings with regard to environmental protection, form of technology and other special issues. Building regulations, specification writing, setting up of architectural drawings for construction and working programme from feasibility to completion are explained. 城市设计3 ARCH3011. Urbanism III (3 credits) This course introduces the theory and practice of landscape planning and design with emphasis on urban situations; site utilization, planting, case studies and field rips are included. 城市设计4 ARCH3012. Urbanism IV (3 credits) This course covers planning objectives, their nature and scope; social and economic implications; introduction to general principles of land use allocation with emphasis on urban context; principles and techniques of planning surveys.
